Payroll employment up over the year in 34 metropolitan areas in February 2020

In February 2020, 34 metropolitan areas had statistically significant over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment and 355 were essentially unchanged. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Yuba City, California (+8.3 percent), Kennewick-Richland, Washington (+5.4 percent), and Boise City, Idaho, and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+3.4 percent each).

Employment also increased by more than 3.0 percent in Austin-Round Rock, Texas; Bakersfield, California; Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona; Nashville-Davidson--Murfreesboro--Franklin, Tennessee; and Provo-Orem, Utah.

In terms of the number of jobs, the largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+126,000 or 3.4 percent), Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (+103,100 or 1.7 percent), and New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+100,100 or 1.0 percent)

Among the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population at least 1 million, nonfarm employment rose over the year in 26 and was essentially unchanged in 25. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+3.4 percent), Austin-Round Rock, Texas (+3.3 percent), and Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona (+3.2 percent).
